As a child of the ’80s, I have loved Rainbow Brite forever. I was her for the first Halloween I can remember, complete with a *very* convincing handmade wig my mom made out of a yellow mop. I had the themed birthday, books, doll, and probably more . It was the number one consumer culture thing I was into. Magic, colors, flying horses, Sprites, awesome rainbow colored costumes, villains that were really much more interesting than the main characters…. I mean, who could ask for more?

I’ve drawn up henna gauntlets to look like her sleeves before, but never actually drew her out. So, I painted my nails appropriately, cut off the ends of my rainbow sock that had lost its mate, and made this Rainbow Brite henna happen! I drew her face first, starting with the eyes, then did an outline of the hair shape and bow, then shaded in and darkened up the lines in her hair. I drew the chest of her costume, then her sleeves and hands, then the skirt, then her awesome moon boots. I gave her Sprite as a companion, made sure she was throwing around some rainbow magic goodness, and made each of my fingertips into mini versions of the ends of her awesome sleeves.

And now the theme song is in my head:

And now it’s probably in yours too.
Here are the lyrics so you can sing along!

Theme Song
Rainbow Brite Rainbow Brite
See the shining light See the shining light
Yes I’m gonna take you to Rainbow Brite Yes I’m gonna take you to Rainbow Brite
Starlite flies Starlite flies
Right before your eyes Right before your eyes
And rainbow colors will cheer you up And rainbow colors will cheer you up
Magic light Magic light
Gonna take you for a ride Gonna take you for a ride
Rainbow Brite Rainbow Brite
See the sining light See the sining light
