How much do henna artists charge?
On average, most professional henna artists charge $150-300 per hour for events like a wedding or birthday party. However, costs can range broadly, with some newer artists charging as little as $95 per hour. Experienced artists who are masters of their craft and work quickly are able to command higher rates. Read on to learn more about the factors that go into henna artists’ pricing.

Some Factors that go into Henna Prices:
Design Size, Complexity, and Style
Larger sized designs take more time to complete, and thus will end up being more expensive than smaller ones. This part is very intuitive to most people. Bridal henna that goes up to the elbows costs more than a simple flower and vine on a finger.
A second henna design feature that affects pricing is the complexity of the design. A standard “henna flower” is much quicker and easier to do than a photo-realistic rendition of a flower, and thus it is much cheaper.
But what about two designs that look to be a very similar size and complexity, but have other differences? Generally, a design done in the artist’s signature style will be the fastest for them to complete, and therefore the least expensive. Most experienced artists are happy to do work in any style, and even relish the challenge! However, when copying existing work in what is effectively someone else’s handwriting, it takes much longer to complete a design of similar size and intricacy, compared to what it would take that artist to do something in their own style. Therefore, when price is a factor, it’s best to choose an artist whose style you love – or, if the artist is already in front of you, to let them create something in their own style. You’ll get much better value for your money (or your allotted time, if someone else is paying for your design, such as at a private party).
Artist Speed
Henna artists charge by the hour, so it’s important to know what sort of design an artist can do within the timeframe you are hiring them for. Experienced henna art professionals, many who have been practicing the artform for most of their lives, can do in 5 minutes what can take a newer henna artist with just a few years of experience 20 or even 30 minutes.
This means a higher hourly rate often means you’re actually paying less per henna design. Think about it – if someone charges $320 per hour, but can do 12 standard guest henna designs in that time, that’s under $27 per design. However, if someone is charging $200 per hour but can only do 5 of those same standard wedding guest mehndi designs per hour, each of those designs is actually costing $40, which is significantly more. When you consider the increased design sensibility and technical skill that comes with experience as well, it becomes clear that hiring the experienced professional artist is the way to go!
Event Type
There are two different ways that henna artists most often are compensated for their time. The first, and the one people are most likely to be looking into when doing a search online to compare pricing, is charging an hourly rate. This is the norm for all private events, as well as public events where the artist’s time is being covered by a sponsoring organization. The hourly rates in the chart above show current trends for hourly pricing.
You may have also seen henna artists out at public events charging per design. In these cases, the prices are typically higher than the artist would end up charging for the same exact design when being hired on an hourly basis. There are many reasons for this. Usually, the event organizer is receiving a portion of the artist’s earnings, whether in the form of a percentage of sales or an upfront booth fee. Cancellation and rain delays are also a risk for outdoor public festivals. When you add in the additional cost of the time and resources it takes for the artist to set up a gorgeous booth, it becomes clear why festival henna prices have to be much higher than what the artist would charge for the exact same design in a private setting.
Experience & Reputation – how supply and demand affects what henna artists charge
More experienced artists tend to have a more extensive portfolio showing a higher calibur of work, and thus are in higher demand. Additionally, experienced henna artists tend to have a broad network of contacts, which means lots of repeat clients. It’s very common for people who have a good experience with an artist to want to hire that same artist again for their next big occasion. Thus, experienced artists tend to fill up their calendars more quickly with these repeat clients, and thus, the demand for their time is higher.

Location & Travel Costs
Location is a weird and interesting factor when it comes to henna artists and what they charge. Artists living in or near major cities with higher costs of living need to charge more just to stay afloat. However, sometimes if an area is *very* densely populated with henna artists, like NYC, NJ, Atlanta, or the San Francisco Bay Area, then there is a race-to-the-bottom effect of higher competition for gigs meaning lower prices for clients. And of course the opposite can also be true – if there are *no* professional henna artists who live in the immediate area where your wedding is, then you will essentially have to “import” one for the day, usually paying a day rate for their services.
What about travel fees? How do those what affect henna artist’s charge?
Sometimes, artists charge an artificially low rate for their henna design services and then add on additional charges for coming to the client’s location to provide those services. If your artist offers the opportunity for you to come to them at a home studio, then this may make sense, and perhaps you can save some money by going to them (but then – how will you drive home with your hands covered in henna, hm?). The vast majority of the time, however, henna artists travel to client’s homes and events to provide their services. Working professional artists understand this and typically include it in their standard pricing model.
That said, if your event is late at night, or requires a significant drive for the artist to get to your location, then you can expect your artist to add the cost of a hotel room and a per diem rate for meals while traveling. Generally, if your artist will be away from home for more than eight hours (with travel + service time both considered) in order to help make your event a success, it is fair to expect these additional charges.
How do we know these rates?
We are in touch with the henna artist community, and pay careful attention to trends. In-depth research in a variety of different markets to see what is the norm in different areas of the United States, in different situations (public offerings vs private bookings), and for artists with a wide range of experience, informs our knowledge as well. We also consult with available resources around the web, such as Thumbtack, a service that provides artists who could use additional experience and exposure a way to connect with clients.
I wrote this article for the same audience as the longstanding and deeply rooted Dear Heather series, and thus it uses that same cover image. However, I have adjusted the format slightly to meet modern needs. Please feel free to share your thoughts about what format you prefer, and what other questions you’d like answers to.
